It will give you a 100% sure diagnosis if you see that. In an extreme case like I think you have with this engine, the oil may come out with milkshake consistency with clots in it. On the gasket leak issue, pay close attention to the oil that comes out when you drain it. Oil looks like baked fudge on the dipstick. With full leather interior, cruise control and the way it rides, its very challenging to not change the oil and sell it. And it is my first Century Limited, or Century of any kind. However, the coolant level is fine after topping up 1.5 gallons of coolant, and its NOT low. I CAN tell you that the "Low Coolant" light blinks after 5 minutes, and then stays on while driving. And i bought this car for $250, and it runs as new. It looks like baked-on fudge on the dipstick. Mechanicx, could it just be sludge? It did just sit for a bit, as evidenced by me topping off 5 quarts of transmission fluid which is the color of red bull energy shot, the old fluid) and now it is in the crosshairs when full warm as should be. Aside from the left front door motor having the glass stuck in the downward position, all is well. Just "straightened" that one door and new glass in it. Needs a door, and truthfully, it does not even need that. The 5W-30 should be fine too, that is what the car calls for and should be ok. Something else you need to worry about is the intake gasket, this engine can be bad to have the intakes to leak and cause trouble. Super Tech has shown really good results in the past,it isnt really known how it will do with the new SN standard but if past results mean anything,it should do fine, especially with short OCI's. If there is little if any sludge under the cover, the engine may not be as bad as thought. If this is the case, short OCI's and filter changes may be all that you need. You dont really want to add anything that could cause sludge to break away to fast or you could cause more harm than good. If you can, that should give you a real idea how bad the sludge is.Depending on how much there is under the cover will give you a better idea about what to do.If there is a lot of sludge under the cover,it should probably be taken off and the sludge removed as much as possible. I also asked myself if i should go to a 0W-30, however i think the use of 5W-30 is more than fine (the cap, and its what i use in my other vehicles with no issues.) Agree?Ĭan you see into the valve cover through the oil fill hole? What shall i do, and how should i proceed? Should i simply change the oil and filter, replace with 5 quarts of the $10/5qts Oil (some costs $8 a quart for comparison purposes) and just drive the little couch? (It does drive very well. Ive de-sludged one and i like it in the other one, however this one i have not yet touched the oil and have put approximately 100 miles on the sludge. I now use Supertech 5W-30 from walmart which carries an API SN specification and costs $10 for 5 quarts in my twp other vehicles. I put it back fast because it was very nasty. It also appears to be overfull, or thats just sludge. Fill cap states "5W-30" very simply and obviously. Paid WELL under its worth, and it drives virtually "as new." It has sludge and a dipstick like i couldnt believe. I have just stumbled across a very nice 1999 Buick Century Limited.
